Does applied horticulture fertilizer work?

Applied nutrient fertilizer will not do what it says. It's a marketing statement to tell the buyer that the product is worth whatever is stated on the package, and if you read the label it's often pretty simple. For example, if you read the label on the bag of "12-8-0 fertilizer", the first 3 numbers on the left are the percentage of nitrogen-phosphorous-potassium (N-P-K) in the fertilizer. The rest of the numbers are the weight per pound of each nutrient. If you look closely, it's 12% N, 8% P and 8% K. It's telling you that these are the percentages of the nutrients in this product, and the numbers are the weights in pounds per 100 pounds of product. The label is very simple. But if you have a little more knowledge than to read the label, you might look at the nutrient chart on the back of the label (again, very simple). It tells you the percentage and weight of the fertilizer nutrients in a table. If you look in the fertilizer table, you'll see a nutrient called "phosphoric acid" which has "3" next to it.

As an example, an N-P-K fertilizer might have 3% nitrogen, 8% phosphorus and 6% potassium. This is the total amount of N-P-K in the product. It is not 100% nitrogen, 8% phosphorus, etc. The total of 3% N-P-K is 8% N, 6% P, etc. So if you make the mistake of multiplying these numbers together to make a pound of fertilizer, you'll get the following:

So you might be thinking, that's great, now I know what's in my fertilizer. But it's not. And here's why. If you want to know the percent of N, you simply add together the percentages and then divide the total by 100%. To convert the percent into a percentage and weight of N, you simply multiply the percentage by the total of N (e.g. 8%*8% = 64%). Thus, you now know the weight of the N. You should have known that when you look at the nutrient chart!

So what does this all mean? It means that if you use a product that says it has 8% N, that's not the N. What it actually has is 8% N, 3% P, 8% K, and the nitrogen is only 8% N. So if you put 8 pounds of fertilizer in the ground, you are putting 4 pounds of nitrogen and 4 pounds of phosphate and 4 pounds of potassium in the ground. As you can see, not very much nitrogen is actually in the fertilizer because it was only 8% N, 6% P, and 8% K and not 64% N. You would have used 12% fertilizer!

If you take the pounds of N, and then the pounds of phosphorus and potassium and divide them by the total of N in your fertilizer, you'll find out that the fertilizer you are using contains a very low percentage of nitrogen in the nutrient, while the phosphorus and potassium are actually the high percentage nutrients! And these figures are based on 100 pounds of fertilizer. You don't add up the percentages of the individual nutrients and then divide them by 100 pounds, because it would make the percentages much too high, because a pound of fertilizer contains only a few grams of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The percentages are based on the total amount of the nutrient in the fertilizer.

To sum it up, in the case of nitrogen, you add up the nitrogen content of all three of the nutrient forms (N-NO3, N-NH4 and N-NP, but not necessarily in that order because nitrogen could also be present as K-nitrate or K-phosphate, which is not normally counted in the total.

If you read the nutrient label of the fertilizer, you'll find that it should say something like this: N (nitrogen): 4.0-4.5% of the fertilizer. Here 4.0% of the fertilizer is the 4% nitrogen that was in the fertilizer. Four percent. Now add up all the percentages. Remember to add the numbers and then divide them by 100, not by the weight of the fertilizer, and you get an answer of .040 or 4%.

Let's try that with a nitrogen example with a different fertilizer. This fertilizer is 20% N, 3% P, 2% K. Okay, we are going to add it up, okay. So if you divide 20% of 20% of 3% by 100, you get 0.040 or 4%. So four percent. Is it one pound? That is not the point. We're just testing to see if you are doing your calculations properly.

Okay, so if you follow the above guidelines, you are going to end up with something like this: 1.5% of the nitrogen is nitrate, 2% of the nitrogen is ammonium and 7.5% of the nitrogen is nitrate plus ammonium.

The last step is to add up the amount of the three forms of nitrogen and divide by the amount of the fertilizer to get the percentage. If you are multiplying the numbers, you must do this in order from left to right. If you are adding them up, you can add them together and divide by the total amount.
